Solving Quadratic Equations: Factoring vs. the Formula

Try factoring first when the numbers are small and the roots look like integers. If nothing factors in about 20 seconds, switch to the quadratic formula: x = (-b ± √(b²-4ac)) / 2a. The discriminant b²-4ac tells you the story: positive means two real roots, zero means one, negative means two complex roots.
